Popular brain supplement linked to shorter lifespan in men

A massive new study involving over 270,000 participants has uncovered a surprising link between a common amino acid and a shorter lifespan specifically in men. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong and the University of Georgia focused their attention on phenylalanine and tyrosine, two building blocks of protein essential for metabolism and brain function. While neither had a significant impact on women, the data suggests that higher levels of tyrosine are associated with reduced life expectancy in men, potentially shortening their lives by nearly a year.

Tyrosine is well known in the wellness world and is frequently sold as a dietary supplement marketed to boost focus, alertness, and cognitive performance. This is because the body uses tyrosine to produce dopamine, a key neurotransmitter that regulates mood and motivation. However, the scale of this research indicates that what helps the brain in the short term might have unintended consequences over a lifetime. By utilizing genetic analysis through Mendelian randomization, scientists found that tyrosine stood out as a consistent factor in male mortality rates even after accounting for other variables.

While the results are striking, experts caution against panic for those currently taking supplements. The researchers did not directly test pills but rather measured existing levels of tyrosine within the body. It remains unclear whether supplementing leads directly to these risks or if certain biological predispositions create high levels that then affect aging. One theory being explored is that tyrosine may play a role in insulin resistance or interact with stress hormones differently across genders, which could explain why women appear unaffected by these elevated levels.

For now, these findings serve more as a warning sign than a medical directive. Scientists believe further research is necessary to determine if adjusting protein intake or avoiding specific supplements could actually extend life. Until more definitive trials are conducted, doctors advise patience before making drastic dietary changes based on these early indicators regarding sex based differences in longevity.
